Billboard and Outdoor Advertising

The best in environmental, outdoor and billboard advertising.

Chevrolet Ad

This summer truly overflowed with interesting stunt advertising, ranging from humorous to just plain absurd! In some combination of the two qualities, this Chevrolet billboard was concocted entirely of pennies. The point was to emphasis the automobile budget-friendless…Perhaps money really does make the world go ’round, because the promotional billboard was picked clean within half an hour!

Ikea Strikes Again

I love Ikea so much I couldn’t resist bringing you some more of their creative ads! This one takes mundane city sights, like those above, and spruces them up with vibrant fabrics. The copy reads: “A little fabric makes a big difference.” Can’t argue with that! I’d be happy to discover that the bus I take everyday had curtains…I assume this particular campaign was short-lived because the fabric would dirty quickly. However, it’s clever enough that it probably gets a lot of free publicity on the internet and via word of mouth.

Mini Cooper Billboard

Even though I don’t really like mini coopers, I think these billboards are interesting. They’re consistent yet varied across different contexts (I displayed two but there are tons more out there).  Plus, the 3D car adds a cool effect.

Gotta love this clever ad…

Shark Week Billboard

pic-114b.JPG

This nine-story, wrap-around outdoor advertisement on an L-shaped apartment building at the intersection of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan was really striking. The contrast of the blue in the ad with the bland brown of the apartment building truly brings both objects to life. The interesting visual and vertical type drew lots of attention. The fact that the ad was located in busy Midtown Manhattan, while still finding solace from the sensory overload that is Times Square, speaks to the well-planned placement of this ad campaign. This is the 20th anniversary of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, so tune in to find out if the ads truly teased the program in an accurate manner.

More McDonalds!

Well, at least it’s about salad this time.  This is another cool McDonalds ad from the Chicago area, designed by Leo Burnett. The letters were made with 16 varieties of lettuce that sprouted over three weeks…Cool billboards like this are expensive to create, but they generate free publicity (via youtube videos etc) for months to come.

An Oldie but a Goodie

A bunch of graffiti on the subway yesterday reminded me of MSN’s “corporate graffiti” back in 2002. To promote the launch of their new product, the company strategically placed around 16,000 MSN “butterfly” decals around Manhattan.  The city eventually intervened and made Microsoft apologize and pay a few fines (they can afford it!). Those hassles were probably worth it, because the event generated an enormous amount of publicity and serves as an awesome example of guerrilla outdoor marketing.

BIC Billboard

Bic Ad

I’m not sure where this billboard was displayed, but I absolutely had to share it. It shows how an uncomplicated, original concept can go a long way in advertising. Like the car ads below, the integration with the environment is simply awesome.

Finally a unique car ad…

How cool are these Mustang billboards? Not only do they grab my attention, but they work in a variety of contexts.

I Couldn’t Resist…

Unfortunately, I have no idea where this billboard was originally displayed, but even the online photo of it definitely caught my eye! The 3d images and clever concept really stand out. Since we see up to 3,000 advertisements every day, having a real draw like this is crucial to attract attention.
